Highlighting the Jewish Community's Involvement in Rebuilding New Orleans

This site is hosted by AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps, which launched its New Orleans program in the fall of 2008. AVODAH engages young people in direct work on the causes and effects of poverty in the United States. This work partners Corps members with service providers and residents in low income communities and equips our Corps members and alumni to emerge as lifelong agents for social change, whose work for justice is rooted in and nourished by Jewish values.

Toiletry Drive for the New Orleans Women’s Shelter, Jan 16-19

A local event posted on the Barack Obama website. Swing by the Kingpin bar uptown next weekend to help out the New Orleans Women’s Shelter, an organization that is working hard to improve lives of local women and families. Read the original post here.

AVODAH Corps Member Yaeli Bronstein currently works an assistant at the New Orleans Women’s Shelter, under Executive Director Jackie Silverman.

January 16th thru 19th, Kingpin and Change Corps of New Orleans are collecting toiletries for the New Orleans Women’s Shelter in the 9th ward that assists homeless women and children. The shelter requests new, unopened, full-sized items (as opposed to samples or hotel bottles) because they try to create a sense of home for these families, rather than an atmosphere of transience.

Items that would help women to get back on their feet and be presentable for job interviews are needed: soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, brushes, combs, etc. You may even have received Christmas gifts that you would rather pass on like perfume or make up.

This is a very easy way to participate in your community… just purchase a couple of extra items when you are doing your own shopping and drop them off at the Kingpin anytime from Friday January 16th to Monday January 19th. There will be a drop box available in the rear of the club throughout their hours of operation. There will also be a drop box in front of the club in the afternoons.

Specific hours may change slightly so please check in a couple of days prior to dropping off your items. If you need to make arrangements to drop off items at a different day or time, please contact Lynda Woolard at 504-862-5945.
